I was out last evening experimenting with some night photography, such as star trails and traffic trails. If anyone is familiar with the Santa Monica/West Los Angeles media district–or even if you aren’t–it’s full of older industrial factories from the turn of the last century. These are all converted now into production and post production companies, often rented cheaper and labeled as “creative space.” At any rate, it’s a great space to experiment with.
At around 8:30pm a police car drives slowly past me, and just past the intersection, they flipped around and pulled up the curb where I stood with my camera mounted on a tripod. I wasn’t sure what I had done wrong, but the enormous spotlight directed at me sure seemed unnecessary. The woman sidekick cop just kept saying “this doesn’t look good.” Thanks, how reassuring…

JPG Magazine Will Survive After All
Posted in: Photography

A week ago I wrote about how JPG Magazine was on the verge of folding–I think due in part to their mandatory print subscription which comes with membership.
At 4:30 this morning, I received an email from their publisher, 8020 Media, stating that they are in fact going to survive thanks to a huge amount of community outpouring. Of course news coverage like those here and here don’t hurt either. They are settling on a buyer next week. Exciting news!

Is JPG Magazine Folding?
Posted in: Photography
JPG Magazine may be shutting down immediately. Founded on an extraordinarily active community, the magazine uses crowdsourcing to gather content for its semi-monthly published paper issues. Sure, traditional publishing may be slowly grinding to a halt, but the hybrid publishing model is so innovative!
Perhaps they should created muli-tiered memberhips and leave the revenue-sucking physical magazine strictly optional.
You can download back issues in PDF form before the site goes down on Monday 1/5.

18 Years and 6,000 Photos Later
Posted in: Photography
I stumbled upon this puzzled account of a discovery that someone had documented their life by taking one Polaroid photo a day–from March 31, 1979 until his death on October 25, 1997. Little other information is initially given by the original website featuring the work except that the author/photographer is Jamie Livingston. Here is coverage from the New York Times, and this post also explains more about the project.
View the Jamie Livingston project in entirety here.

How to Earn a Photo Equipment Review
Posted in: Marketing, Photography
[photo by meltremblayphotography]I was browsing the strobist.com flickr group before going to bed last Friday night, and I came upon a bizarre and brief contest of sorts. Someone had “sponsored” someone to write a Speedlite kit review–the person with the 18th comment on the thread gets to write the review, and then kit is complimentary.
I got into a “bidding war” with another photographer, an attempt to keep count in the actual comment failed and I ended up winning by a 50/50 chance. Check it out here: [link]
What an interesting idea to engage the community. So much better than more traditional ways of building a brand. Check back in a week or two and I’ll let you know what happens…

Check out the work of German photographer Martin Klimas. The entire high-speed photography series is gorgeous, and little eerie. Makes me want to try my own!
